Five Friday Facts: Energy in Japan After Great East Japan Earthquake

On October 5, the Brookings Institution held an event on Japan’s energy future. Below are highlights from the experts’ presentations.

  • There are still nuclear reactors under construction in Japan and they could be operational past 2040.

  • Japan has a self-sufficiency ratio of less than 5% without nuclear in its energy mix.

  • Japan now depends on oil and gas for 90% of its energy needs. This has caused Japan’s first trade deficit in 30 years.

  • In July 2012, Japan passed a Feed in Tariff (FIT) for renewables.

  • Japan has a goal of 300 billion kWh in renewables by 2030.
