Plaid shirts aren’t just for lumberjacks this fall. Plaid is very trendy, plaid shirts included. If it has been a while since you wore a plaid shirt, or if this is a new trend for you, in today’s post in this series I am using this piece from Modcloth to create five casual plaid shirt outfits.
As usual in this series, not only will I be repeating the styling components several times in this post but I will also be pulling wardrobe options from previous posts. I do this to not only show how one item can be styled five ways but to also show how you can build off of what you may already own in your wardrobe.
Okay, on to the looks and my tips on how to incorporate the casual plaid shirt into your outfits.
Five Casual Plaid Shirt Outfits
Look #1
Let’s start with the most obvious way to wear a casual plaid shirt, with a pair of jeans, like this classic skinny pair by Calvin Klein. To give the outfit an easy weekend look I styled the outfit with a slouchy motorcycle boot by Aldo and put a navy cardigan from Mango over the plaid shirt. Now for the pops: To bring in the red, I added a red leather Stella & Dot bracelet, a red handbag by Big Buddha. The outfit is finished with a pair of navy earrings, also by Stella & Dot.
Look #2
Sticking with jeans for this next outfit, if the plaid shirt has you feeling nostalgic for the 90′s, combat boots, like these by Steve Madden, are back. In fact, just yesterday I saw quite a few women wearing this shoe style. While some of these ladies had their jeans tucked into their boots, I liked the idea of taking a pair of cuffed ankle length jeans, like these from Paige into the colder months using shoes like this. Keeping the look super casual, I added this fun tote from Modcloth and added a navy infinity scarf, also by Steve Madden. A pair of K. Amato wood earrings adds a casual finish to the outfit.
Look #3
Instead of putting something over this casual plaid shirt, I decided to layer this slim navy turtleneck from Mango underneath it for a totally different look. With it, I added a military mini skirt from J. Crew, a pair of tall cognac boots by Pink Pepper and handbag by Lucky Brand. The outfit is simply finished with a pair of Lucky Brand earrings.
Look #4
By belting this plaid shirt with this leather linked belt, it looks great with a maxi skirt, like this one from Uniqlo, and gives the top a whole new look, especially when styled with the same tall riding boot from the previous look. The skirt has a high low feature that shows off the boots and can be more figure flattering for petite women. The outfit is finished with styling components that were all used in previous outfits.
Look #5
This casual plaid shirt looks great with a pair of skinny cargos, like these by Guess. I belted the top with a belt by Ralph Lauren and, while a pair of riding boots would work perfectly, loved these Modcloth laced booties with the outfit. Next, I added a denim jacket and cashmere scarf in camel, both from J. Crew, the same red bracelet for a pop, gold earrings by Ankora and finished the outfit with a taupe handbag.
