Fit to Be Tied: The Tie Front Shirt Trend is Back

By Bridgetteraes @BridgetteRaes

Remember the tie front shirt?  When undone, it looked like you had two rabbit ears hanging from the hem of your shirt at the front.  When tied, the tie front shirt created the look of a relaxed cinched waist.  While I have a hard time accepting that I’m old enough to see trends recycle themselves, I do have to admit, the tie front trend really works for summer, especially considering bottoms are becoming more high waisted.

If you’re feeling like you want to embrace this trend again, but don’t feel like digging up old photographs of yourself from the early 90′s on how to do it, I put some look together to show you a few ways you can embrace the tie front shirt trend.

Considering there are those out there who missed the tie front shirt trend the first time, I decided to start with a bit of a hipster look using it.  Here, for a weekend look, the tie front shirt is a polka dot denim and works with a pair of ankle length colored jeans, trendy oxfords, a cross body bag and straw hat.

A tie front shirt is a great looking with a high-waist skirt.  Worn with a fuller skirt, it definitely creates a sweeter, more feminine look.  To make the outfit a little less expected, I chose a pop of yellow sandals and earrings.

If you remember the tie front shirt trend from the 90′s, then you know that these tops don’t just come in button-down styles.  A great way to give a tunic style t-shirt some shape is to choose one with a tie front.   It definitely changes the up the look of a basic t and works great with white denim– you can cover up the lower half of your body while not losing your waist shape.

A relaxed tie front shirt creates a great proportion with a pair of bermuda shorts.  Plus, think of the tie front shirt similar to the figure flattering qualities of ruching, nobody will be able to see your lumps and bumps and your waist will still be defined.

You can consider the tie front shirt trend for work only if the top is professional looking, and you should still consider your work environment before you wear it as it can have a casual look about it.  Here, I decided to go full on 90′s nostalgia with a large polka dot tie front blouse and a colored high-waisted pencil skirt.

What do you think of the tie front shirt trend returning?
