JOB SUMMARY:

Under direct supervision, performs general fire-fighting work in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires. Performs maintenance of fire department equipment and quarters. Performs hazardous tasks under emergency conditions.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Under the direction of a Fire Captain, responds to emergency calls, fire alarms and emergency situations;
  • Responds to fire alarms/alerts and performs physical requirements of laying and connecting water hoses, directing water stream, raising/climbing ladders and utilizing other equipment;
  • Performs duties by making forcible entry into buildings when necessary to ventilate, open walls and other structures to effectively extinguish a fire;
  • Assists in rescuing citizens from emergency situations and renders first aid and medical assistance;
  • Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris;
  • Participates in drills, demonstrations and courses in firefighting techniques, medical aid, heavy rescue, hazardous material, equipment maintenance and related areas;
  • Maintains general knowledge of response territory in order to select the most efficient route to be taken to respond to emergency calls;
  • Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire department property; cleans and washes walls and floors; makes minor repairs to property and equipment; washes, hangs and dries hose; washes, cleans, polishes and tests apparatus;
  • Participates in local school fire prevention programs by presenting or preparing presentations, performs station tours and other public awareness;
  • May be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: • Must be at least 18 years of age at date of application • High School Diploma or equivalent required • TCFP (Texas Commission on Fire Protection) Structural Firefighter • Texas DSHS (Department of State Health Services) EMT-B • Must have a valid driver’s license at time of application and at time of hire. Must have a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s license within six (6) months of hire • Must score a minimum of 70% on the written entrance examination • Must be able to pass a background check

Special Requirements

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: • Work is labor intensive and performed indoors and outdoors • Will be required to lift, hold and carry tools and equipment • Required to sit, stand, reach, twist, walk, bend, crawl and kneel • Required to work on uneven surfaces, climb ladders, work in trenches and cramped spaces • Fine dexterity and manipulation necessary to operate tools and equipment • Required to work in extreme temperatures (heat, cold, etc.) • Required to work near smoke, dirt, noise, vibration and dangerous machinery • Exposure to toxic and non-toxic odors, fumes, dusts, mists and gases • Required to lift, move and carry objects in excess of 100 lbs when climbing and/or walking

Miscellaneous Information

Work requires knowledge of principles and practices of firefighting; knowledge of first aid and resuscitation principles and practices; ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies; knowledge of the geography of the City; ability to operate complex equipment.
