SUMMARY:

The incumbent is responsible for personnel, station and equipment in their company at all times. Enforces discipline and promotion and maintenance of efficiency. Must be constantly vigilant and require that their commands measure up to a high standard of departmental efficiency and morale.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Other duties may be assigned.  Note: All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times.

Maintain control of company while on duty and ensure policy, rules and regulations, practices and procedures are followed at all times.Respond with company to fire alarms and emergency calls as directed, when first to arrive assume command and direct operations until the arrival of a superior officer.

Must be familiar with their districts and the general duties of their respective commands to perform their job effectively.

Must use good judgment in the performance of their duties. At fires must be particularly judicious in laying lines, placing ladders, spotting equipment, calling for assistance, and in other operations necessary to the preservation of life and property.

Train and instruct members of their companies. Conduct regular drills to maintain efficiency and coordination of their commands at a high standard.Maintain quarter security at all times. Ensure an adult accompanies children on premises.Make periodic inspections of buildings, street, alleys, and special hazards as directed and keep a comprehensive record.

Make sure members are properly relieved or arrangements have been made before they go off-duty.

Oversee the care and protection of all apparatus and department equipment assigned to or stored in quarters.

Perform a thorough inspection of quarters and equipment on a daily basis to maintain a high standard of quality and appearance.

Ensure all traffic regulations and department policies are strictly adhered to with regard to driving the apparatus.

Report any incompetence, neglect of duty, disobedience of orders, or violation of the rules and regulations by any member of his/her company to the Battalion Chief on duty.

Perform other duties as assigned or directed.

Regular attendance and timeliness is required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Directly supervises the work of approximately 2-4 employees within the Fire Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the city’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and direct work; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

No Driver shall be eligible for examination for advancement to the rank of Captain until he or she has served no less than two (2) years in the rank of Driver, such two (2) years consisting of six (6) months in probationary status and eighteen (18) months in rank as Driver. Applicant must also be certified as Instructor I as outlined in NFPA 1041 and Fire Officer I & Fire Officer II as outlined in NFPA 1021 and be certified in Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations as outlined in NFPA 472.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Problem solving and analytical ability are required to perform the duties of this position. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also required. The incumbent should have knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment. Must have a complete understanding of all equipment and techniques used in firefighting.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Occasionally sit; use hands to handle objects, and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, and color vision. The ability to adjust focus and depth perception is also required.

The employee must also meet the following physical demands:

  • The employee is occasionally required to lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Must not have a mental or physical problem with heights and confined space.
  • Must be physical able to climb stairs and/or ladder of varied heights while performing Fire Department activities.
  • Must be capable of working with additional weight of approximately 45 pounds on their back.
