As a new parent myself, I’m always interested in how technology can help my wife and I care for our baby and how it might assist his growth and development. In this post, Jay Harris from Home Depot outlines the options you have for monitoring your baby when you’re not in the room. I was particularly intrigued by the fact you can watch and / or listen to your baby from anywhere in the world via your smartphone. This is definitely an option I’ll be exploring!

The first time you put your baby down to sleep in her own room and close the door can be one of the hardest things new parents have to face. Fortunately, baby monitors have been around for years, allowing us to keep an ear, or even an eye, on the little one without fear of waking her from her nap.
Find the best solution for you
There are several questions you need to begin with to find the right product you’re your needs:
- Do you want a video monitor so you can see what your child is doing or is audio sufficient?
- Do you need your monitor to be wireless to be able to view from different rooms or will you always be watching from the same place?
- Would you like to control the camera’s movement remotely? There are touch-screen monitors such as the Baby Touch Digital Video Monitor that allow you to aim the camera by simply touching the screen of the monitor.
- Other options will even allow you to monitor your child from anywhere in the world via your smartphone or computer including: the Smart Baby Monitor by Withings, Baby Ping, IZON, and Lorex Live View, among many others.
Install it in a snap
Once you’ve settled on a device that meets your needs, you need to install it. Fortunately, the vast majority of baby monitors on the market today transmit their audio and video feeds wirelessly, so installation is a simple matter of picking a spot for the camera and turning it on.
Caring for an infant can be a stressful time, but using the right technology to be sure your child is sleeping well can sometimes be the best way to ensure that you are able to sleep soundly as well.
