Feed Your Mind: Are Online Classes Worth Taking?

Whether you are a stay at home mom trying to make good use of your free time, a job hunter looking to improve your resume, or simply want to learn new skills – taking an online class is a convenient way to do it.

Online classes are now offered covering an array of interests, skills, and specialties. You can take whatever suits you best as it covers everything from a specific language that you are interested in, to a number of different IT online classes like those offered by ComputerPower. The certifications you get from these online schools can also be accepted in universities or job opportunities. However, it is important to consider the advantages and disadvantages of online classes before committing your time and money to one.

Advantages of Online Classes

FLEXIBILITY. Most online courses are scheduled to complement a student’s current schedule. It is offered with different slots so the student can accommodate it despite concurrent regular work or personal commitments. Assignments are given with consideration to a manageable pace, and projects are mostly provided with deadlines as opposed to direct supervision. This allows students to learn the value of time management. Students can also ask for considerable extensions if their circumstances call for it. This advantage can be seen in professionals taking their MA’s after shifts, or in our men and women in the service who are deployed and want to pursue more education, for example.

INTERACTION. Despite not being able to talk directly to faculty, communication and interaction is logged into online exchanges through chat or email, which can be a great reference for instructions and advice. It is also much easier to ask your instructor about concerns and questions you would most likely keep to yourself in a physical classroom setting because you can direct the question to the faculty without having to stand in front of him/her face to face.

PAPERLESS. Books are replaced by modules and instruction manuals that are written based on the outline of your classes. You are no longer required to buy books or other references, and should you need it, there is a wealth of information online.

COMPUTER SKILLS REQUIRED. In order to really utilize an online class, you should be equipped with basic computer knowledge. For example, if you are going to suggest an online class to an elderly loved one, you should probably take the time to sit down and teach him/her basic computer software and internet research skills.

LEGITIMACY AND ACCEPTANCE. With more and more online classes being provided online, it is important to thoroughly research the institutions providing them before signing up for one. They should be legitimate companies / online schools with a good amount of satisfied students produced. If you are taking the class for a specific purpose, say, if you want to get that promotion – ask your HR department for suggestions on which classes to take and where to take them.
