Father's Day Gift Idea: "Dad Is Fat," by Jim Gaffigan

By Parentingauthor @ParentingAuthor

One of my favorite new TV shows is The Jim Gaffigan Show, which airs on TV Land. (Season 2 begins on Father's Day!) The show is based on comedian Jim Gaffigan's real life with his wife Jeannie and their five children who live in a small apartment in New York City. The show is hilarious, and I hope you'll watch it!
Once I saw Jim's TV show, I checked out his comedy routines (which are suitable for everyone, by the way, with no cursing or off-color jokes). His favorite topics are his family and food, so it's no surprise that his first two books also reflect these themes: Dad Is Fat and Food: A Love Story. I haven't read Food yet (it's next on my list), but I just finished chuckling my way through Dad Is Fat. I love how Jim doesn't sugarcoat his life with his family. His kids are adorable but also excruciatingly normal and therefore love to drive Jim insane at times. Can you relate to this?
Being a parent to a young child is being an actor. I've been lucky enough to act in movies, TV, and on Broadway, but I believe my finest acting moments have been with my children. Parents of young children are always acting. You act excited to read a story for the five-hundredth time. You act impressed someone went to the bathroom on the toilet. The excitement I show to some of the children's scribbles should get me a Golden Globe nomination.
We've all had those moments when we're afraid we'll scream if we have to read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish one more time! Jim's book is full of confessions that all parents of young children will relate to, especially dads. Jim admits that parenting doesn't come naturally to him, like it does to his wife, and he's always afraid he'll screw up. But he wouldn't trade the experience for anything.
Dad Is Fat is the perfect gift for Father's Day. Jim Gaffigan will be your dad's new best buddy after he reads about Jim's ongoing voyage through fatherhood. I hope you'll pick up a copy!
