The question I keep returning to here is: did Father John Misty always plan to release a saccharine, nostalgia-seeped love song this week, or did he (and his team) decide that he needed a little positive press after this past weekend’s “meltdown.” I suppose in this case it doesn’t really matter, though, because the song itself is so damn good. J. Tillman should feel free to continue blurting out expletives on stage if we can get a more steady stream of music!
Rife with Father John Misty’s tongue-in-cheek romantics, “Real Love Baby” combines decades-old production qualities and vocal layering with J. Tillman’s always brilliant melodies. The result is a straightforward, charming track that’s infinitely listenable — it’s simplified without feeling dumbed down. Listen and enjoy above!
