The second vehicle operated by the Imperial, Missouri man drove off the right side of the roadway in an attempt to avoid the other vehicle but struck the car head-on, then overturned and caught fire.

Head-On Crashes Considered to be the Most Serious of Accidents

Head-On Collisions are usually considered to be the most serious of all crashes.  When two vehicles strike each other from the front, the injuries are usually devastating if not fatal. Head-on crashes are the most serious for several reasons. Primarily because when two cars crash into one another , they usually strike with greater force than when cars hit at any other angle—the force applied in the crash is the combined force of both cars.  Another key reason that head-on crashes are so serious is because generally the force is concentrated close to the driver and the front-seat passengers. In a head-on collision, the victims absorb the bulk of the force of the direct hit.

The car accident in Camden County is  still under investigation.  Physical evidence from the crash scene will have to be evaluated by crash experts and statements taken of any witnesses to the accident. As well, the victim’s injuries often tell accident reconstruction experts many things about a crash.  Determining why the initial car crossed into oncoming lanes of traffic may be difficult.  Sometimes statements from witnesses can assist investigators as well as a statement from the driver as well.  However, sometimes when a driver sustains serious injuries, their memory may not be clear on their actions just prior to the accident.  No doubt, investigators will work to discover the events that led to this crash in order to determine the cause.

Head-on crashes occur for different reasons

There are some common general causes for head-on collisions, however, none of the reasons have been yet determined as the cause for Sunday’s fatal accident.  The reasons listed below are for informational and prevention reasons:

  • Drunk Driving
  • Drowsy Driving
  • Unsafe passing on two-lane roads
  • speeding

Fatal Analysis Reporting System indicates that three out of four head-on crashes occur on rural roads and three out of four head-on crashes occur on undivided two-lane roads.
