False Safety

Our false concepts imprison us, but our fears get in the way. We think we are all safe in the walls we build up. Illness followed by suffering, greed leads to debt, abandonment causes loneliness. Sofia Wellman’s new book “If the Shoe Fits, Go Barefoot” goes into detail about this line of thinking and how to get a new positive perspective. I had the task to capture this dilemma in an illustration for a promo mailer for the book. I tried several possibilities, but this one seems to say it best. Instead of the viewer getting bogged down into the realistic details of a complex scene I basically created a new graphic approach that mimics printmaking. It was really fun playing with all the textures. In the end it was really different than the cover that I illustrated for the same book. Here are some process images leading up to the final illustration.
