Fall Dining in New Orleans: Part One

Here are a few places where we ate well in New Orleans this Fall.  This follows Summer Dining in New Orleans 2014 and Spring selections: Some Great New Orleans Meals in 2014 – Part One and Some Great New Orleans Meals in 2014 – Part Two. You can see some of the variety of cuisines in this city of over 1300 restaurants in the offerings below.

Katie's 
was voted best neighborhood place by Gambit for 2014. We had gumbo, grilled oysters with cheese and bacon, spinach salad and fried onion rings. It is located at 3701 Iberville St., (504) 488-6582.

Chibugnu offers “Italian from scratch.”  We had olive oil fried calamari, san marzano marinara, caper-dill aioli; Elicoidali - charred summer squash and corn, black truffle ricotta, basil; Agnolotti - ‘nduja & sausage stuffed pasta, clams, mussel, shrimp, brodo di mar. Then for desert we had cannoli with pistachio gelato. It is located at 709 St. Charles Ave. (504-558-8990.

Dong Phuong is an authentic Vietnamese place in New Orleans East. Dong Phuong literally means East.  The name depicts not only the culinary style but also the location in eastern New Orleans.  Their retail store has been providing fresh breads and pastries since the early eighties.  We had egg rolls, Vietnamese crepe, and mandarin duck rice plate. It is located at 14207 Chef Menteur Hwy, (504) 254-0296

Cochon is Donald Link’s Cajun place. As the site says, “At Cochon, Chef Link has reconnected with his culinary roots, serving the traditional Cajun Southern dishes he grew up with. Chef Link and Chef/Co-owner Stephen Stryjewski are working with locally sourced pork, fresh produce and seafood, focusing on traditional methods, creating authentic flavors of Cajun country.”  We had wood-fired oysters with chili garlic butter, braised pork cheeks with fried field pea & sorghum salad & grilled eggplant, caraway sausage, chicken & andouille gumbo, chocolate peanut butter pie. It is located at 930 Tchoupitoulas St, (504) 588-2123.

Marti’s is a new place on Rampart Street and was a 2013 New Orleans Magazine best award winner. It was reopened In October of 2013, Housed in the historic Gentilich building on the corner of Rampart and Dumaine,, Marti’s was reopened. We had Gulf Shrimp a la Panncha & Grilled calamari with herbed polenta, heirloom eggplant & tomato-red pepper purée, Louisiana Blue Cab Soup saffron oil & garlic croutons, Sonoma County Duck Confit with fregola salad, uvae & peach mostard, pasta with sage brown butter and squash. It is located at 1041 Dumaine St, (504) 522-5478.

Cane & Table is located in the French Quarter and was also a 2013 New Orleans Magazine best award winner. We ate in the court yard and had Crispy Rum Ribs - Truebridge Duroc Pork. El Dorado 3 Year Rum. Papaya Chutney. Sambol, cerviche – drum and shrimp, Cauliflower Paella - Maitake Mushrooms. Crispy Brussel Sprouts. Capers, Home-Made Tostones. Mojo Mayo, It is located at 1113 Decatur Street. (504) 581-1112.

Chiba is our favorite Japanese place in the New Orleans. We go often. This time we had Calamari tempura salad, lobster tempura, fried Panko oysters, and Bananas Foster egg roll. It is located at 8312 Oak St, (504) 826-9119

We also went to Buffa's a number of times. We go mainly for the music but the food is excellent. Below you can see their crawfish etoufee with Aurora Nealand and Tom McDermott and then their boudin balls with Antoine Diel and his trio.
