Last week, the case for a People’s Vote received several key boosts.
First, on Monday morning, the European Court of Justice ruled that the UK can unilaterally withdraw Article 50. This means that if the government goes back to the people – which anyone can see is the only way out of parliamentary deadlock – and the people decide against Brexit, we can now stay in the EU under our current deal.
The second, third and fourth boosts came, surprisingly, from the Tories.
First we had to endure the shameful sight of our prime minister pulling a vote on her deal because she knew she would lose.
This was followed up by Tory backbenchers entirely abandoning any pretense of working together in the national interest, and calling a vote of no confidence. They have now lost that vote, which leaves May secure for a year – but which makes absolutely no difference to the parliamentary arithmetic that caused May to pull her vote in the first place.
Together with the ruling on Article 50, this tedious Tory time-wasting leaves a People’s Vote as the only credible way to get us out of this mess of the government’s making.
