Facebook Adds New Feature to Let You Choose What Happens to Your Account After You Die

Posted on the 16 February 2015 by Nrjperera @nrjperera

Facebook has found a solution to one of its most debated questions, what happens to a user’s account after that person dies? Legacy contact is the solution.

New setting allows you to set up your account to be automatically deleted after you passed away. Or you can set up a legacy contact, a family member or someone who you’d trust, allowing him/her to access your account after your death and update your profile, status, and even download your photos .

The legacy contact will be able to -:

  • Write a post to display at the top of the memorialized Timeline (for example, to announce a memorial service or share a special message)
  • Respond to new friend requests from family members and friends who were not yet connected on Facebook
  • Update the profile picture and cover photo
  • And, if you chooses, to download an archive of the photos, posts and profile information

Our team at Facebook is grateful and humbled to be working on these improvements. We hope this work will help people experience loss with a greater sense of possibility, comfort and support.

This would be a great solution for everyone on Facebook, to leave a message behind to all your friends and also let everyone know that you’re not going to be online for chats anymore.

The legacy contact feature is currently only available in the US. Facebook promises to roll out this feature to more countries gradually. You can access this feature through Settings> Security and Legacy Contact at the bottom of the page.
