Secret Affinity, Book 2  EVER LOST
Ever Lost by Melissa MacVicar: Book ReviewNew town, new school, new ghost.

Jade has a dedicated boyfriend, an overprotective mom, and a full scholarship. Uprooted from Nantucket, Jade is installed off-island at her dad’s new house so she can attend snobby Layton Academy. Leaving Charlie behind is sheer torment, but living with her father has plenty of dangerous distraction—in the form of a terrifying spirit haunting her new school. Hottie classmate Mateo Fernandez can’t see the ghost, but he knows its story. He’d like to know hers, too, but Jade still misses Charlie, even though distance seems to be changing him.

With support from Mateo and the mysterious Noemie, Jade commits to helping the agonized spirit cross over. As she delves into the ghost’s past, the disturbing secrets Jade learns draw her into a deadly confrontation with a desperate man. If she can’t play his demented game, the spirit’s harrowing fate could become her own.

MY REVIEW
4 Stars
Following the unsettling events and ghostly encounters on Nantucket Island, Jade is sent to live with her biological father. The distance this puts between Jade and her new step-brother Charlie is an unwelcome change for the two love-sick teens, but their parents are convinced that both children will be able to form new, more acceptable friendships if given the right opportunities.Family tensions are high as Jade and Charlie feel resentment and loneliness.Unfortunately for Jade, a change of scenery just means there are new ghosts to contend with – this time without Charlie’s support.Thankfully, however, a new mentor and some new friends help Jade though the difficulties she must face. The book held my attention, but Jade was not as likeable to me as she was in the earlier book. I quickly tired of the love triangle and hoped she would give her new situation a chance.Jade and Charlie may be destined to someday be together, but experiencing a few new relationships is not a bad thing for either of them – just my opinion.I look forward to the next book and I’m hoping Jade will continue to explore and learn more about her special abilities as she matures.   Reviewed by Laurie-J
Secret Affinity, Book 1  EVER NEAR

Ever Lost by Melissa MacVicar: Book ReviewLove is ever near. But trouble is never far.
Nantucket Island is haunted, but only sixteen-year-old Jade Irving knows it. Ignoring the disturbing spirits isn’t an option, because one dwells in the enormous historic home she shares with her newly blended family. Jade is finding it more and more difficult to explain away Lacey’s ghostly, anguished tantrums, especially with Charlie, her gorgeous, almost step-brother, living right across the hall.
When a power-hungry ghost hunter tracks down Jade and blackmails her, Jade’s secret teeters on the edge of exposure, and her entire future hangs in the balance. If anyone finds out Jade can talk to ghosts, her life will be forever changed.
Can she save herself, free Lacey, and hang on to her tenuous connection with Charlie? Or will everything she ever wanted slip through her fingers?

MY REVIEW (Published previously)
5 stars
As soon as I began reading I was pulled under the spell of this book.Nothing was as I expected. The ghosts Jade sees and hears are nasty, spiteful, dangerous and frightening. These spirits are malevolent and angry.Jade has kept her secret safe for sixteen years – fearing no one would believe her and apprehensive that she would be institutionalized as mentally unbalanced.
Jade and her mother have just moved into a huge house on beautiful and affluent Nantucket Island. Unfortunately, the house is haunted, and the poltergeist is causing Jade serious physical harm and mental anguish. After Charlie, her soon-to-be step-brother witnesses a couple of unexplained events, he manages to wheedle some information out of Jade.He is skeptical, but seeing the toll the episodes have taken on Jade, he does his best to protect her.
I loved this story! It was so original, with terrifying ghostly encounters that chilled me.There were so many other things that set this one apart from similar stories, too. There were many contrasting forces at work throughout, including socio-economic considerations and racial differences. Relationships are complicated, and Ms. MacVicar deftly engages the reader’s intellect while steering away from most of the worn-out stereotypes.Jade is supremely likable; her youthful voice is fresh, funny, and beguiling. I am looking forward to the next adventure.
This book was given to me by the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
