They call it “Gokakukei Iyokan”. It’s actually a mix of mandarians and oranges. According to Kotaku, these pentagon oranges are becoming a big deal in Japan as they are going on sale in local festivals. This is going to be even bigger than square-shaped melons.

Not sure how exactly they do this, but it looks like they get this shape by squeezing oranges in a pentagon shaped print thingy, when the fruit is growing in trees. Well, at least that’s how I’d try to do it with those mangoes growing in our backyard.
Apparently, Japanese folks are giving these oranges to students who’s facing exams as a good luck charm, according to Daily Mail. Actually that’s the whole meaning behind the name of the fruit as well. “Gokakukei Iyokan” means “sweet smell of success in exams”. How about that?
