What is Shelf Safe Milk?
Shelf safe milk is self-explanatory: it's Grade A milk that can be stored on a shelf or in a cupboard. There's no need to store it in the refrigerator unless the packaging has been opened. It has the same nutritional value as refrigerated milk, providing nearly half of the daily recommended vitamins in just an 8 oz container!
How is Shelf Safe Milk Made?
Regular milk sold in stores goes through a basic pasteurization process which helps to remove any harmful bacteria or contaminants in the milk, but it needs to be refrigerated or it spoils. Shelf safe milk goes through a similar process, but instead is pasteurized at ultra high temperature (UHT) and is then put into Tetra Paks which help to keep out light, air, and harmful contaminants. Because of this extra pasteurization and the special packaging, shelf safe milk does not need to be refrigerated until the package has been opened.
How long does Shelf Safe Milk Last?
Due to the Tetra Paks and the pasteurization at UHT, shelf safe milk will last upwards of 6 months. If the package is opened, it will last 7-10 days in the refrigerator. Since it lasts so long, it's an excellent item to have on hand in case of emergencies where refrigeration is not possible!How are Tetra Paks good for the environment?
Tetra Paks are made up of 70% paper from re-grown trees and can be recycled where cartons can be recycled.

Review of Shelf Safe Milk
I was sent a variety of shelf safe milks to sample with my kids. They were so excited to see one of their favorite brands: TruMoo chocolate milk. I liked the flavors of all of the brands: regular 1%, chocolate, vanilla, and fruity cereal.It's recommended that you chill the milks before you drink them, mostly because we're all so used to drinking cold milk, but honestly, it wasn't bad as is. It was all very tasty! There was a slight difference in taste, but you could never tell by the looks on their faces that they even noticed! To me, it was a creamier texture than refrigerated milk, but I liked it.
My daughter tried the Organic Valley chocolate milk and loved it! My son got his favorite TruMoo and sipped every last drop!
