It's the time of year when you inhale the scents of the seasons. One of which stirs up memories of childhood is the sweet and spicy scent of a Gingerbread cottage, which you'll discover at the former boyhood home of our nation's first President in Fredericksburg, VA. While visiting this 18th-century mansion your senses will come alive as you admire the myriad of sparkling lights and unique holiday decorations; then listen to the joyful costumed interpreters, who's share tales from the past. Also, the Ferry Farm, site of the boyhood home of President George Washington, will hold its annual Gingerbread House Contest and Exhibit.
Lively bands, festive floats, along with Santa and Mrs. Claus bring the holiday season to life in downtown Fredericksburg during the Annual Fredericksburg Christmas Parade. Afterwards, The James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library, located in downtown Fredericksburg, will honor the 5th president of the United States with an open house. This event includes charming holiday decorations presented by a local garden club, period music, light refreshments, and a chance to meet with "President Monroe" and celebrate the holiday season.
More festive fun can be enjoyed with performances of "It's a Wonderful Life" and "A Christmas Carol: The Musical." These classic tales of the holiday season will be performed at the Riverside Dinner Theater.
Travel along the Jingle Bell Trail and explore four Virginia wineries that include Lake Anna, James River, Cooper and Grayhaven. Sample delicious wines while enjoying the company of family and friends.
Ellwood will hold a Free Victorian-era celebration as well, offering a glimpse of a post-Civil War celebration in Virginia. Children's activities and a visit from Santa are scheduled. Event hours are 9 a.m. through 2 p.m. in Mid December. Another Free event will be in Chatham, where a Civil War-era dressed Santa Claus will share historic tales, and share refreshments and entertainment with guests.
Among the specials offered is the "Holiday Shopping in Fredericksburg" package that features two great holiday shopping destinations in the area - Spotsylvania Towne Centre and Fredericksburg's historic district. When seeking a holiday getaway option check-in to the Richard Johnston Inn, named one of four of Southern Living magazine's 2006 "Best of the South" bed and breakfast inns. Located in Fredericksburg's historic district, the 18th century town house features seven guest rooms and two suites. Throughout the holiday season, 15 Christmas trees adorn the inn, one in each room. Guests are also greeted by Santa's sleigh in the courtyard area and children can delight in visits from the man himself on weekends until just before Christmas. A New Year's Eve package is also available and offers a 2-night minimum stay and includes champagne, noisemakers, full breakfast each morning and a New Years Day buffet.
