Groovecaffe Netlabel Profile Introduction

Welcome to Netlabel Profiles, the show that explores some of the best and most diverse music on the internet today. On this episode of Netlabel Profiles we visit a country that:

  • Invented the Necktie
  • Is home to the “world’s most beautiful sunset” according to famed horror film maker, Alfred Hitchcock
  • Is currently most known as the setting for “Kings Landing” in Game of Thrones
  • Is tied with Spain for the highest number of UNESCO Intangible Goods
  • Is home to the world’s smallest town
  • Has a famous breed of dog named after one of it’s coastlines. And yes, it appears the dog originated in this country.
  • Has money named after a rodent, and coins named after a lime tree.
  • Is home to the world’s biggest truffle.
  • Has a museum of broken relationships
  • Has over 1,000 islands.
  • Invented the solid-ink fountain pen, pre-cursor to the ball point pen.
  • The Zinfandel grape originated in this country, and has been proven by DNA testing.

What country is this? And which Netlabel is based on this country? All will be revealed after a little musical interlude…

Groovecaffe Netlabel Profile

That was Dusk ‘Til Dawn by Dan Marshall from our featured Netlabel: Groovecaffe, based in Zagreb, Croatia.

So, to fill in the blanks on a few of the facts I mentioned above:

  • The dogs are Dalmatians, made famous in the 101 Dalamatians movies. They are name after the Dalmatia coast.
  • The world’s smallest town is: Hum, with a population that fluctuates between 17 and 23.
  • The money is named “Kuna”, while the coins are “lipa” which is the linden Lime tree.

Researching interesting facts on Croatia has been quite an interesting and somewhat humorous adventure. Why? Well, it appears that there are a number of “facts” that are, well, let’s call them questionable. For example:

  • Nikola Tesla was born in Croatia. Fact is he was born in a part of Serbia that is now part of Croatia.
  • Brac stones from Croatia were used in building part of the US White House.
  • Has the world’s smallest Cathedral, despite the Guinness Book of World Records bestowing that honor on a Cathedral in Missouri.
  • Has the world’s oldest public theater, despite there being theaters dating back to the Greeks.
  • And don’t even get started on Marco Polo. Seriously, there are many questions about where he was born, it seems no one knows for certain.

And there are others. Certainly Croatia isn’t the only country to have inaccuracies in print, especially on the Internet. Perhaps they are the results of myths that have been widespread for so long that many people now believe them, and / or maybe it’s just a matter of national pride that perpetuates them. However, the number of them, and the fact that some are real “hum-dingers” has really made this an entertaining bit of research.

Groovecaffe is an independent Netlabel that has originally founded in 2006, driven by a love for music that is not restricted to electronic music. The current operators of the label are (please forgive me for butchering these names): Igor ?un?i?, Robert Selimovi?, and two people dedicated to the visual aspects of the label: Katarina Masla?ak and Igor Sitar.

Currently they have forty nine release from twenty nine artist. All digital releases are available as free downloads in MP3 format, and released under a Creative Commons Attribution, Non-Commercial, No Derivatives license. They also have one unofficial CDr release.

The philosophy of Groovecaffe is best stated as:

…to make a shift away from the mainstream of established concepts, seeking a middle way, exploring various electronic styles and genres, promoting new artists and their musical visions.

Free of established patterns during creation and production, yet oriented towards the real life, differ from hermetic schemes, giving universal messages and symbols. The label also encourages collaboration of musicians from different labels and backgrounds in purpose of creating new visions on previous releases. The main goal of collaboration are projects created from new sounds, and to compile old sounds into combinations of new sound pleasure.

Let’s dig into the varied and interesting catalog of this netlabel on Netlabel Profiles.

Groovecaffe Interview

1. Please introduce yourself…

Robert: Hello, my name is Robert. Born and live in Zagreb/Croatia, I’m freelance information technologist, happily married, in free time I like messing with instruments and electronics by keeping myself in “absolute beginner’s” mode. I am also passionate music gourmet, not fixed on any particularly genre but rather search for connections in mostly fragmented music industry.

Igor : My name is Igor. I’m from Daruvar which is about 100km from capital city Zagreb. Currently working at local technical store as salesman. In free time I’m freelance Java programmer and passionate MTB rider. Last few years I don’t have much time for music production but when I find free time (usually rainy day

:)
), I take my keyboard and pound it as much is I can. I’m 29 years old and living with my girlfriend.

2. How did you decide that you wanted to run a netlabel? (Did anyone or anything inspire you to do this?)

The idea for opening net label came to us by accident, chatting with members by that time wellknown internet forum ER45, who gathers local electronic music fans and producers. In that time, because of lack of official/major electronic labels who don’t recognize new wave of music subgenres, we decided to create/open one of the first net label in our country.

3. Why did you decide to release your works under a Creative Commons license?

Because in that time this was convenient choice for relatively unknown artists to be able to reach wider audience and still retain their rights and CC license doesn’t offer fewer rights than are granted under copyright law.

4. How much time do you spend on running your netlabel?

Depends from release to release. In generally we need one week for making release ready to be published. But for that to be possible, there are always preliminary work involving coordination with the author of music, choosing right tracks, preparing visual part with our designers and final production of material for publication, and lots of cups of coffees.

5. Have there been any projects (ie netlabel related, but not necessarily about a release, like maybe you set up a concert / festival / etc.) that are especially memorable to you?

We had several appearances on local radio 101 FM (Deep FM show), also there was a few label showcase in Zagreb and Daruvar, but one was memorable, police interrupted us because of appearance of Croatian president across the place where we played. Their explanation was that we were too loud and we annoyed their audience.

6. Is there a longterm goal for your label?

There is no longterm goal, we just go by the “flow”. Perhaps it is important to emphasize that we never considered much attention to mass production and a bunch of issues, instead of trying to find the quality and uniqueness of music that we represent.

7. Are you involved in anything else other than producing music? (IE, videos, CD’s, wallpapers, tshirts, etc.)

We plan to release label gadgets in form of TShirts and compilations Cd’s. There is one Groovecaffe theme for Mozilla Firefox browser available in Mozilla theme addon page. https://addons.mozilla.org/enUS/firefox/addon/groovecaffe/

8. Any cool stories about projects / releases? (IE, they got used in someone else’s movie / video, or something similar.)

We had several occasions where we were contracted for commercial projects ( compilation Cd’s for marketing campaigns), also custom sampler CD’s for third parties. Cool story? As mentioned above involving annoyed president.

9. What is your take on the future of music? (IE, do you think streaming will be more important than downloads, do you think the major labels will go bankrupt, do you think more people are turning to netlabels than traditional music sources, etc.)

New technology has already changed the way we consume and listen music, what really misses is the absence of good collaborative community platform for the artists, as well as expert reviewers. Regarding to question “will major labels will bankrupt”, I say immediately “not at all” it is endless play between “majors and minors” chords, in this game, one without the other would not able to exist.

10. Any upcoming projects / releases / events you would like to mention?

Yes, we are preparing two new releases, but for now let’s keep a little secret.
