It is so satisfying to throw trash in an empty trash can. You take the dirty, the grimy, and the smelly and toss it away never to be seen again. It's so easy to get rid of unwanted things when the can is empty. On the other hand, when the trash is full and you're procrastinating on taking it out you have to get your hands dirty and push the trash down making room for more. Every time you open the lid you catch the stench of old garbage. And God forbid you fill the bag too much, and it rips when you finally decide to take it out, leaving trash all over your home.
This is how life works. You have to take the trash out of your life: out of your habits, out of your emotions, out of your relationships... You can only hold so much garbage. Let it go early on so you don't risk it bubbling up when your metaphorical bag breaks. Don't keep it around so long that you're continually smelling it and pushing it down, getting yourself into even more of a mess.
Empty your trashcan. Move on to easier, cleaner, better smelling living.
