Emma Currie Releases New Single, Midnight Sky [Interview]

West Vancouver's Emma Currie is excited to release her brand new single, Midnight Sky to the world today. It is the culmination of hard work, new creative exploration, and a new beginning in her musical career.

We caught up with Emma in Toronto on the day before the release to sit down and talk about her new music, what it's felt like as she approaches released day, her influences, and more.

Music isn't new to Emma Currie. She's been writing, recording, and playing for years. But her new music has taken a change in direction, and it's one that she believes will make a big difference. We asked if there had been any big changes in how she approached things now compared to her 2017 releases Dangerous Things and Why Do I. Emma told us that the biggest change has come in her songwriting. When she was working with Taylor-Rae Poznikoff at Studio Cloud 30, she got the advice to write what's she's lived. And she'd never done that before. She told us that when she was younger she had stayed about from her own life in her songs. She wrote about things that her friends had lived through, or from inspiration she pulled from movies or books or other places.

So she started, and in co-writing Midnight Sky with Taylor-Rae she went into her own stories and found that it was where she should be. That turn in how she saw things and was ready to embrace them stuck and Emma told us that her upcoming EP will feature songs that are closer to her than ever before.

We talked about the new experiences that have come with Emma's new music, and she pointed to the recording as well as the video shoot for Midnight Sky. From little things like getting her first spray tan and jumping into freezing cold sprinklers to the experience of recording sessions that went late into the night, there were new things for her to be part of. What she made clear though, is that she has been happy with every piece of it.

Note: As we talked about music, Emma told us that she is super excited to see Jonas Brothers live and loves their new album, Happiness Begins. And we don't blame her!

As our conversation shifted to the influences in her musical life, Emma started listing names that might not seem like they go together, but for her, they're a natural fit.

Emma told us that she grew up on mostly 80's rock and 90's country, but from that, Shania Twain stood above the rest. She says that even though she's not a country singer, she looks at Shania as an influence as a performer and how she interacts with fans, and how she has lived her life. From there she talked about pop influences like Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers before we got into some real classics.

She pointed to joining the R&B band in high school as a big moment that allowed her to sing and do something she loved as part of her school life. But it also introduced her to new music. Emma said that being in the band put Aretha Franklin on her radar. And then Stevie Wonder and Elvis after that. Huge names from previous generations, but all with the ability to influence her musically as she moved forward in her life and pursuit of her own music.

Emma Currie has had the chance to grow as an artist, learning about herself and how the process works with the support of co-writers, producers, and more behind-the-scenes professionals. There has been a lot of work, but she talks about all of it with a smile on her face and appreciation for the opportunity to make it all happen.

Midnight Sky is the lead single from Emma Currie's upcoming debut EP. It's part one of the new chapter she's in. And with the enthusiasm that she shared with us, it's clear to see that she's excited and ready for everything that comes next.

Listen to Midnight Sky now and stay tuned for more from Emma!
