Dutch country singer Ellen Shae is looking for a way out on her new album Caged Bird, searching for recogntion as a musician, albeit with some trepidation,. She does not have to worry about that - she has found her voice and sound. Her training as a classical acoustic guitar player allows her to color her compositions with sharp eye for detail. Her storytelling capabilities turns the mainly autobiographical lyrics into songs with universal appeal.
Melancholy and resilience are both trying to get the upper hand. There is no clear winner, whcih is just as well. Real life does not do Hollywood endings. Backed by a smattering of American veterans Caged Bird is a full-blown country album that combines the best of both worlds. Rich DePaolo (bass, guitars, mandolin, banjo, keys) and Sera Smolen (cello), Bill King (drums), Doug Robinsonn (upright bass), Max Buckholtz (violin, viola) and Mark Karlsen (soprano sax) worked their magic, and Dutchman Gait Klein Kromhof (harmonica) came on board for a couple of choice bluesy parts..
