Obviously, I’m not reading short stories right now. But I have to say that Elizabeth Bowen’s short story called The Demon Lover has me intrigued.
The Demon Lover is one of Bowen’s most popular short stories, and she had many. The story sounds very Stephen King-esque.
A young woman is in love with a man who dies in World War I. She had sworn to love him forever but, heartbroken, she moves on with her life and eventually marries another man.
But one day she discovers a letter, with the date of the present day, from her former, presumed dead, lover. In the letter, the dead lover mentions a meeting they had prearranged for that very evening, long before he passed on. In a panic, she hails a taxi. And freaky things happen after that.
If you’ve read The Death of the Heart, it sounds like The Demon Lover couldn’t be any more different in tone than that novel. Very Stephen King-ish indeed.
