Sometime mid-summer when everyone was cursing the “Ninety-one thousand damn degrees” of heat and wondering if “Power Ranger” setting could in fact be made into a reality, Leeds-based artist Eaves released a set of demos. Leading with the track “Little Rock”, Eaves is off to one hell of a start. With delicious harmonies building to an aching swell, the single invites a return to weary nostalgia blurred with sweeping waves of hope reminiscent of artists like Dylan or Vedder.
The solo project of Joseph Lyons is a welcome rest from trends of overproduction too often found in music. Beyond the magnitude of “Little Rock”, the other demos released by Lyons offer the comfort of less complicated times. From “Just One Boat”, with its fantasy of escape, to the longing folk wishes found on “Dream Me A Home”, Eaves’ music stands its ground amidst the likes of Villagers, Willy Mason and Fionn Regan. The dangle of these demos is just the tease needed to leave us all slobbering at the mouth for more.
Sweat-stained summer is coming to an end (and the devil may finally be lifting his ass crack from our living rooms soon), but with any luck Eaves is just getting started. Listen to “Little Rock” above and download a new track, “For Mannington Bowes (Alone in My Mind)”, here.
