Summertime always reminds me of being a kid. Playing Ghost in the Graveyard, Kick the Can, water balloon fights, and swimming at the community pool. I had an absolute blast growing up and I can only hope to give my kids the same fabulous summers my parents gave me.
Living in the south can be a love hate relationship. The summer is super hot and humid and the only way to be outside is in the early am, late evening, or in water! We don't have a pool but I did buy this super fun water thing (is that a technical term?) and a baby pool for P. We love to play in the water and we love to host BBQs at our house. Going out to eat at a restaurant is not nearly as fun now that I have two tiny humans who can move.
So we like to make our own fun in the backyard. Between the swing set, pool, and playhouse... we've got it covered. And because I love to host people at my house, this seems to be where we always end up :) And I love that!
We had a BBQ to celebrate my friend's birthday last weekend and I wanted to do something fun. Of course hot dogs and hamburgers were a given, but I wanted to do some other fun things for the kids.
So... I set it up like a little carnival. Candy, popcorn, hot dog machine, etc. And to drink? SunnyD. These bottles are a heck of a lot easier than anything they can squeeze and get all over themselves. We had grown up drinks as well, but I think the grown ups were hovering over the SunnyD more than anything else. Must bring them back to their own childhood, huh?
Kids lose attention quickly, right? So to keep them busy, I had materials for them to turn their SunnyD bottles into some fun and different things. Binoculars for my nature lovers, water toys for the babies, and glow tubes for everyone when the sun went down.
Here's what I grabbed in addition to the food, drink, and supplies for the party:

And that's it. I cut the ends off the bottles and had my husband hold them together as I taped them in the middle. And then I tied a piece of bakers twine around the top of each bottle. Seriously, who knew these would be such a hit?
For the water toys, we just poked a bunch of holes in the top and it came out like a little watering can. Those were pretty popular with the babies :)
And for the glow toys, I bought bracelet glow sticks and bent them to fit inside the bottle. The green showed up better than the other colors but I had to offer a variety or there would have been fits ;) I only used one per bottle but if you wanted to put more in there, you could. Wouldn't these be fun during bath time too??
Summer fun isn't just for kids and I can't wait to make new memories this summer. Bring on the parties, the fun, and yes... even the Georgia heat.
