Easy Decor Updates For a More Relaxing and Stylish Bedroom Environment

By Alyssa Martinez @ItsMariaAlyssa

According to a study from UNSW Sydney, Australia, the average adult spends 9.31 hours in a ‘sleep environment,’ of which 7.12 are actually spent sleeping. Any of you doomscrollers and lovers of Netflixing in bed on a Sunday will know the hours can far exceed those numbers.

We spend so much time in our bedrooms, so we’ve created the ultimate guide to easy decor updates that make yours more comfortable and stylish.

More Relaxing

We’ll start with relaxing, because that’s what most of us are interested in doing in the bedroom.

Creating the Bed of Your Dreams

How can we talk about a relaxing bedroom without giving you tips on creating the bed of your dreams?

Our top tip would be to think about your mattress. Is it between 7 and 10 years old? It might need changing. Is it not actually that comfy, and you’ve always dreamt of a new one? We’d highly recommend considering investing in a new mattress if the one you’ve got just isn’t cutting it, whether it’s in terms of age, size, or comfort.

A queen size mattress is the perfect size for most people. It’s definitely plenty big enough for one person, but some people might prefer a king-size mattress if sharing the bed with another person.

Then, it’s all about the basics. Layering the bed with fresh, soft Egyptian cotton sheets (anywhere between a 200-600 thread count is OK), soft Egyptian cotton duvet covers, and either Egyptian cotton pillowcases or silk if you’re interested in skincare and haircare. Silk pillows are known for protecting hair from breakage and keeping skin looking and feeling more supple.

A Bedside Table with Everything You Need

A relaxing bedroom can be as simple as a bedside table with a decorative lamp and a warm LED bulb; a small tray to organize your clutter if you have a lot; a candle for the vibes, even if you never light it (or a diffuser, if that’s more your style); and just the thought never to overload the surface to create a more calming space.

If you don’t have a bedside table, it will change your life. You can put your phone there to charge, water for the night, and the book you’re reading; and the dimly lit lamp close to the bed is so comforting.

They’re really not expensive to buy online, and we really love round-shaped designs over square blocks.

More Stylish

You can still go stylish with comfort, and here are some of our top recommendations.

Panelled Walls with Accent Lighting

Panelled walls are actually not that difficult, and anyone who would class themselves as less than a DIY novice can do it. There are so many DIY options available, but we know that with these sorts of things, a video is better to watch and replay. Here’s the best tutorial we could find on YouTube.

Once you’ve followed the tutorial, either painting neutral or bold accent colors (colors that typically contrast or complement the primary colors in your bedroom) works so well. For example, you could paint one wall a rich chocolate brown, and the rest cream. That color-palette mix definitely mixes style with comfort.

For the accent lighting, you can simply add LED strip lighting (here’s another tutorial on doing that) or install battery-powered wall lamps so you don’t have cables hanging down.

Oval Floor Mirror with Built-in Lighting

Every room needs a mirror, and we can’t speak highly enough of an oval floor mirror with built-in lighting. Just type that into Google, and you’ll see so many options. They’re so classy, but make sure the built-in lighting is a warm LED and not a bright LED, unless that’s what you want.

There are so many great options, ranging from cheaper, smaller mirrors to massive and extremely expensive ones. One tip we will say is to measure the space you want to put yours in and check the measurement of the mirror you’re interested in. And make sure that it has a stand so that it can be freestanding from the floor. Leaning mirrors create a more relaxed, modern feel than wall-mounted ones.

Top tip: Always place the mirror where it reflects natural light to brighten the room.

There are so many things you can do with your bedroom to bring comfort and style, but a lot of it is down to personal preference. We will say that investing in a few bedroom upgrades makes a massive difference to how you feel when you’re in there.
