Early 2014 Steelers Mock Draft

By Kipper @pghsportsforum
Well, I used to do these quite frequently in past years, but I have been largely unavailable lately. However, since I do have the time now I figured I would put out my first Steelers Mock Draft of 2014 and, actually, my first published mock draft since 2012. As a sort of introduction let me first lay down the following groundwork:
-Positions of Need:
*S, CB, DT, OT, WR
-Offseason Moves:
* Trade Lamarr Woodley to Arizona for a 3rd round pick
* Release Mike Adams, OT
* Re-sign Fernando Velasco to play C
-Pick Selection: 18th
With the above established as the background for this Mock Draft, let me get to the players who I, currently, see as best fits for this team and make some selections.
Round One:
There are a plethora of players I like for the Steelers in the first round, since I see us, unfortunately, in a position to be selecting in either the late-teens or early twenties and, thus, unable to procure the elite talent at the top of the first round. Around the 18th pick I see the two big-named offensive tackles, Matthews and Lewan, already being off the board. I also think Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans will, likewise, be off the board, although one of the two could slip since there could and should be a run on QBs early in this draft if all the eligible players declare who are likely to. That leaves S, CB, and DL as possibilities so as not to reach for an OL or WR with the selection. That leaves: Haha Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama; Jason Verrett, CB, TCU; Ra'Shede Hageman, DT, Minnesota; Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State; Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, CB, Oregon; and Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan Stat.
Those who know me know of my huge affiliation for Alabama players and, therefore, I am a very big fan of the ball-hawking, coverage-elite safety from Alabama, Clinton-Dix. Nick Saban coached players are well-prepared for the NFL and I see nothing different from the standout safety Clinton-Dix. He's got good size, good speed, covers very well (including tall receivers), covers a lot of ground and has great closing speed. The above should, thus, make my choice an easy one. However, that is not the case here. Justin Gilbert has been touted as the far-and-away best coverage corner in the country and has, quite honestly, been elite all season. He exploded onto the Thorpe Award scene this year returning multiple interceptions for scores as well as run back a kick 100-yards for a score. Twice this season I have seen him mentioned as a slightly smaller Patrick Peterson. Gilbert has the potential to fly up the draft boards; however, the main reason he could be available for the Steelers is that we could see as many as 5 QBs taken at the top of this years first round (Bridgewater, Mariota, Manziel, Hundley, and possibly Derek Carr). If Justin Gilbert is there he is my selection.
Selection:Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
Round Two:
There are, again, several different ways the Steelers could go here. I think there will be some skill at WR, there will also be a couple decent OTs likely available. Currently there are a handful of players that I am looking at/targeting who have a high/mid second round grade: Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt; Corey Robinson, OT, South Carolina; Odell Beckham, Jr.; Deone Bucannon, S, Washington State; Morgan Moses, OT, Virginia; and, I guess this is one more than a handful, Allen Robinson, WR, Penn State.
For me the list is enough that I would be happy with any of the above players as our second pick. However, there is one that I would be more than happy with…and that is Deone Bucannon. Bucannon has accounted for 10 turnovers (five interceptions, three forced fumbles, two recovered fumbles) so far this season. When attacking the line of scrimmage in run support or protecting the middle against unsuspecting receivers, Bucannon's closing speed and willingness to drop his shoulder can result in the eye-popping collisions. His size, speed, play-making ability, and ability to close on the running game make him an ideal choice for the Pittsburgh Steelers secondary.
Selection:Deone Bucannon, S, Washington State
Round Three:, from Arizona
For me this is a prime spot to grab a new DT for the Steelers. There are several mid-third/early-fourth round graded DTs that could be big additions to the middle of the Steelers defensive line. DeAndre Coleman, DT, California; Daniel McCullers, DT, Tennessee; and Will Sutton, DT, Arizona State. Sutton has had a disappointing senior season based on is breakout last year and has dropped from a potential end of the first-round selection to a mid-third round prospect at this point. I love the production of Sutton who, even with his drop off from an amazing year last year, has put up quite impressive numbers. He's got the size, although he needs to add another 10-15lbs to be a true anchor DT. He is incredibly strong and gets good penetration through the center of the line. He's only 6-0 and only 305 currently, but Casey Hampton was only 6-1 so his height shouldn't be too much of an issue…its really the weight that he'd need to add. DeAndre Coleman looks a lot more like a Haloti Ngata build at 6-5 and 320 with the ability to add another 15-20lbs. Then there is Daniel McCullers…all 6-8 350lbs of him. He's massive, raw, but supremely talented. He does not have elite speed or quickness nor does he get great penetration rushing the QB. What he does do, however, is occupy blocks, stand his ground, hold the point of attack, and stuff the run. There are some concerns already about whether he could be a 3-down NT due to his size, but he's not really overweight and he carries his weight really well. I have seen multiple comparisons to Ted Washington and if he even approaches the ability of Ted Washington he'd be a great 3rd round selection. I think each of the above players have their own unique attributes that they bring to the table, but when looking for the highest-upside there is one selection.
Selection:Daniel McCullers, DT, Tennesee
Round Four:
Selection:Austin Wentworth, OT, Fresno State
Round Five:
Selection:L'Damian Washington, WR, Missouri
Round Six:
Selection:Andre Hal, CB, Vanderbilt
Round Seven:
Selection:Patrick O'Donnell, P, Miami
