Oh the beloved paleta!
I grew up in a neighborhood that had a paletero that would pass by on this blue bike, that looked like a big tricycle, with an ice chest in the back. I remember another paletero that would just walk the streets ringing a bell!
We would run out to stop him if we heard it from inside the house, but it was the best when you were outside with your neighbors, because you know everyone was bound to get one, and you had enough time to run inside and ask your Mom for change! I remember them being .50 cents, now they are a whole $1.00!
We don't have a paletero in our neighborhood, but I'm glad my kids can experience that at my parents house and through this book!
The story, What Can You Do With a Paleta? ¿Qué puedes hacer con una paleta?, written by San Antonio Poet Laureate, Carmen Tafolla, is told through the eyes of a little girl, who shows her vibrant neighborhood, colorful background and has such a fun and happy tone.
Her imagination runs wild with all of the wonderful things you can do with a paleta. And ends with the easiest...making friends.
The imagery in the book makes so many childhood connections for me. It brings back memories of playing with my cousins outside at my grandparents house, while my parents and grandparents sat on the back porch and watched.
I really enjoyed making these connections with my children after we read the story. Not only is a fun read, it also prompts so many stories to share with them from my childhood.
