As alumni of UTSA, I couldn't be more proud to share this book with my children. Ricardo's Race is a book, written by Diane Gonzales Bertrand, about Ricardo Romo, who is now the President of UTSA. This book, written both in English and Spanish, tells his story of being a young child, growing up in the Westside of San Antonio, his family life and his educational journey.
I love that it includes cultural influences that many young Hispanic children in San Antonio can relate to. From the barbacoa his family sold from their store, the images of the Virgen de Guadalupe, to the names of the public schools he attended, children make a connection. The story shows how Romo pursued his athletic goals through high school and received a scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin.
The book continues with how he returned to San Antonio and how he contributes to our community. We try our best to encourage higher learning by interweaving it into their everyday lives, and this book is just another example to them, that they can be a young child in San Antonio, Texas, go to college, and one day even be the President of a University!
Bilingual books help promote our dual language learning at home. English speaking parents can read the story, Spanish speaking parents can share the same story, and children can pick it up and read in any language they choose!
