Valentine’s Day? Oy vey. Everywhere you turn your head, it seems that people are either sickeningly indulging in a Hallmark brand of romance or are at the opposite end of the spectrum and doing everything they can to condemn the notion of love. If you don’t necessarily align yourself with either extreme, have a sweetie or don’t, check out this prolific release from singer/songwriter Drew Danburry called “70 Love Songs”, which celebrates the spirit of love without forcing it into your personal life.

These 70 songs each serve as a little love note to their eponymous girls. Mostly sticking within the folk pop genre, there are echos of The Flaming Lips, Beirut, Bon Iver, Deerhunter, and Jonathan Richman depending on which song/special guest you’re listening to. While most of the songs are tributes to personal friends of Danburry’s, look out for shout outs to Paula Abdul (track 29), Scarlett Johansson (track 32) and even Xena the Warrior Princess (track 31). My personal favorites are “Erica” (track 3), a delicate ballad featuring a xylophone and chorus of harmonies; “Lorianne” (track 10), a swaying doo-wop number; and the hazy psych pop, “Xochitl” (track 9). 70 girls, 70 songs, 70 moods – as Danburry said himself, “There’s something in there for everyone.”
