Mum and THE wedding dress, 1957
Oh lordy.
Can you remember when you first borrowed your mother’s lipstick and shoes and trotted around the bedroom, beads dangling? I can still see the treasure trove of (costume) jewels which lay in my Mum’s bedroom drawer…..little padded, tightly hinged boxes of joy which opened like reluctant clams to reveal their prizes. In Mum’s case, everything was modest – strings of fake pearls and glass beads, pin brooches and silver lockets; but no less captivating to young eyes and sticky fingers. I knew I shouldn’t be in there, but it was a Venus flytrap for a little girl.
The great thing about being a child of the 70s was the velvet. Long skirts, wide belts and puffy sleeves. There was even a Beaver fur coat and hat in Mum’s darkest recesses….perfectly PC for a young secretary in 1960, but confined to the back of the wardrobe by the time I arrived. All great fodder for clompy shoes and THAT jewelry.
And then there was the wedding dress. The softest folds of 1950s lace over a satin bodice. How did my Mum fit into this? She must have been a princess. I wore it and I tore it, but she didn’t seem to mind. She must have loved me a lot.
