Dream a Little Dream… Re-do Your Bedroom with Cushions

By Cassiefairy @Cassiefairy
If you’ve been following my series of blog posts about my bedroom makeover before Christmas you’ll know that I’m trying to decorate my bedroom and make it into a tranquil, restful space on a budget. So far, I’ve used book pages to wallpaper a feature wall and plain white bedding for a ‘hotel’ look. It’s not always practical to completely re-decorate your bedroom but if you have the urge to re-do your bedroom to get a fresh theme or to spice it up a bit for the new year, cushions can really help. With a little thought and research you could use cushions to infuse a breath of fresh air into what is probably the most important room in your home!   Be inspired & dare to be different
Take inspiration by looking online, when you visit a hotel, by browsing through home decor magazines or catalogues, researching websites and walking past shop displays and shop windows. Basically, I’m saying  we should let experienced interior designers do the work! Get ideas from them, then take those ideas home with you and use them for inspiration. Colour scheme
If you decide to go with a particular theme, you can choose cushions to complement it, in which case you might want to choose colours that complement your existing color scheme. Look carefully at which colours you want to really bring out in your existing decor and bedding – I’m going to use some of the striped fabric from my existing blinds to make some cushions for the bed and tie the whole look together. Or you might decide to use contrasting colours to make a really dramatic difference to your bedroom. For dazzling color combinations in cushions, my personal favorite is Yorkshire Linen Co. You might choose to go with a specific theme which is personal to you, such as your favorite animal or color. Maybe you want your bedroom to feel fun or sensual with an aura of romance? For the traditional romantic look, think red velvet, pink silk, heart shapes and ribbons – very good for valentines day! For a saucier feel think black and gold.

Shape
Those who have looked around at cushions will know that a cushion does not have to be a simple square in
one flat color. Cushions are available in different shapes, sizes and designs: rolls long or short, rectangles, round cushions, heart shapes, star shapes, animal shapes and so on.

Be Creative

If you can knit, find a knitting pattern and some chunky wool, and and get those needles working. This is a really cheap way to make bespoke cushion covers. For cool knitting accessories, my favorite is The Knitting Shop. Or like I usually do, maybe you could sew your own cushion covers using different fabrics and designs. When you have selected the size of the cushion you want, buy the fabric from off the roll and your cushions will be unique. Don’t forget to add a zip or buttons if you want the cushion cover to be removable so that you can wash it. Also remember that redoing your bedroom using cushions need not be expensive – look in bargain shops or on market stalls for fabric, buttons, ribbons, embroidered badges, tassels or other jewels and accessories. You will be amazed what you can find and incorporate into your unique cushion design.

Arranging Cushions

Once you have your cushions, you can get to work arranging them on the bed, chair, futon, storage chest and so on. Cushions can be scattered, arranged in straight lines, placed diagonally, can be at the top of the bed or the middle. If you like neat and tidy, consider stripes and long rectangular cushions. I think you’d be amazed at what a big difference cushions make when you want to freshen a room up or accentuate a theme – my bedroom simply doesn’t feel ‘finished’ without a couple of cushions on the bed, so I think it’s essential that I start work right away!

I’m going to get cracking on creating a lovely pair of matching cushions over the weekend and I will let you know how I get on with an update next week - watch this space!
