Could you recall early in your childhood when you were left alone in a car, perhaps for 5, 10 or even 15 minutes? That time could feel like an eternity, at a young age, when the possibility of no one returning could keep you in a panic. That's how London photographer Martin Usborne felt at an early age as this became the fundamental basis of his new photography book The Silence of Dogs in Cars. Usborne's book features a rich offering of images of dogs depicted in isolation. It is this isolation that explores “that feeling, both in relation to myself and to animals in general. says Usborne in a prepared statement that “the dog in the car is a metaphor, not just for the way that animals (both domestic and wild) are so often silenced and controlled by humans but for the way that we so often silence and control the darker parts of ourselves: the fear and loneliness that we would rather keep locked away.”
