Draft : Jordan Could Immediately Bolster the Defense for Steelers

By Kipper @pghsportsforum

With the 2013 NFL draft coming up in two months, the Steelers have a lot of work to with regards to prioritizing their needs on their draft board. Some of the mock drafts that are out there have the Steelers taking a wide receiver with their first round choice, and while I agree that they are going to need to pick one up in the draft, I don't believe the first round is the time for them to do that with the needs they have on defense. The biggest needs I see this team having are OLB and Safety and earlier I talked about two players out of Georgia, Jarvis Jones and Baccari Rambo, who could pay immediate dividends for the Steelers defense. Another DE/OLB who could have the same kind of impact would be Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon.
Dion Jordan is 6'7'' and 243 lbs which projects him to be an OLB in the NFL and when you take in to account his speed and quickness, you have the prototypical Steelers OLB. Jordon's 40 yard dash time is an incredible 4.85 seconds, he also recorded the fastest electronic 20 yard dash time for defensive lineman at 1.71 seconds. This guy also adds quite a bit of athleticism to his package of size and speed, Starting off his career at Oregon as a TE after recording 54 catches for 804 yards in his senior year of high school. At the start of his sophomore season however, he switched to DE out of need an made his presence felt immediately. In his senior season he racked up 60 tackles, 32 solo and tallied 9 sacks.
The 3-4 scheme that the Steelers play is a perfect fit for Jordan's complete package of size and speed. He has the ability to rush the QB off the edge and is great at getting off blocks to stuff the run and has the speed to handle coverage, his long arms will be an asset in knocking down passes. He has been lauded for being a quick learner that never gives up on a play. With the future of James Harrison in question, Dion Jordon is a first round talent who should be available for the Steelers, who own the 17th selection in the draft.
