Saw this DC-8 on the ramp at Kalaeloa Airport in Hawaii. Part of the collection of the defunct Naval Air Museum Barbers Point, this aircraft wears the colors of Air Transport International. This DC-8 was delivered to SAS Scandinavian Airlines in 1968 then bounced around a variety of carriers before ending up with ATI in 1998 and eventually to the museum in 2013. First flown in 1958, the origins of the DC-8 airliner began as the loser of the USAF tanker competition. The DC-8 was produced until 1972 with 556 aircraft built, ultimately superseded by larger wide-body airliners. On August 21, 1961, a Douglas DC-8 broke the sound barrier at Mach 1.012 (660 mph) while in a controlled dive through 41,000 feet and maintained that speed for 16 seconds, becoming the first civilian jet, and the first jet airliner, to achieve supersonic flight.
