The CASA 2.111 was a medium bomber derived from the WWII German Heinkel He 111 and produced in Spain under license by Construcciones Aeronáuticas SA (CASA). This example was built by CASA in 1950 and put into storage due to a lack of engines, finally fitted with Rolls-Royce Merlin engines in 1956. Configured for photographic and map-making duties, it began service with the Spanish Air Force’s Cartographic Group from December 1956 onwards. It continued to serve in various squadrons, including operations during the Spanish campaign in the Western Sahara, until January 1975, when it was officially listed as surplus. This aircraft was considered to be the last CASA 2.111 in active service with the Spanish Air Force. This aircraft was notable, having been used during filming of the 1969 movie “Battle of Britain”. The 2.111 models differed significantly in details from Heinkel’s wartime He 111H design while using essentially the same exact airframe in appearance, featuring heavier armament and Rolls-Royce Merlin engines. This aircraft was added to the Cavanaugh Flight Museum collection in 1995.
