Dot Legacy are here to shake up Indie Week. Get out to one of their remaining sets and prepare yourself for a wild ride.
The four-piece pop/rock/electronic band from Paris, France are hot off their time at Indie Week UK, and they're looking forward to the opportunities that Indie Week in Toronto brings. We caught up with Damien Quintard and Arnaud Merckling at Sneaky Dee's prior to their first set at The Hideout. They were charming, funny and still a little jet lagged but excited to get up in front of Toronto crowds. We talked about life and love, Viking heritage (Arnaud) and the band's excitement for what comes next.
Lead singer and bass player Damien Quintard is relatively young but he's wise beyond his years when it comes to music. He's a grammy winner, and the classically trained musician has been playing since he was three. Dot Legacy's core three members (Damien, Arnaud and John Defontaine) have been together since 2014. Drummer, Arthur Ménard joined the band more recently. He's the fourth in a line of drummers, and it feels like this one is going to stick.
To date, they've released three albums, Dot Legacy (2014), To The Others (2016), and Dot Legacy - Live in Porto Alegre (2018), and their videos are interesting and beautiful. The band has played all over the world and they've brought their vision to Canada for all of us to enjoy.
We'd done our research and had watched the latest live footage of the band, but we were still not prepared for the levels of their live show's energy.
There was a quick back and forth with the sound person and then it was on. From the first note to the last they were firing on high. There was nothing jet lagged about this performance. Damien stood centre stage belting out lyrics and holding down the bass line, while Arnaud and John filled the venue with hard rocking guitar and synth sounds. Not to be outdone, Arthur Ménard absolutely blew me away on the drums. I could hardly take my eyes off of him.

The four mesh into one and the resultant music is all-encompassing and enlightening. I have a feeling they'll be on my year end list of favourites.
