Domestic Manners of the Americans

When, in what now seems like another life, I was an academic teaching English Literature, I specialised in women's writing of the 18th and 19th centuries, and actually edited a couple of anthologies of the same. Women's Writing of the Victorian Period included, among much else, extracts from this delightful book by Anthony Trollope's mother, who spent an eventful period in America, casting an extremely critical and satirical eye on much she saw there. The book made her instantly famous and indeed notorious, and is still an most excellent and lively read. I reviewed the new OUP edition for Shiny New Books -- you can read my review here.
