Domain Names

Posted on the 25 January 2019 by Hmcurator

I just read a good post on the namecheap blog about “5 Things to Never Include in a Domain Name“. I know back when I first started working on the Harvey Mercheum website, I had a very hard time deciding what to use for a domain name.

The original name for the website was to be “The Harvey Comics Merchandise Virtual Museum”, which was way too long to make a domain name out of. My first solution was to use an acronym, www.hcmvm.org, but at the time it was not available. I then read that acronyms should be avoided unless already well known and used, so it was just as well. That is one point the namecheap post does not make, but I think is still valid.

It was in the process of trying to come up with something shorter that I coined the portmanteau “Mercheum”, and went with www.harveymercheum.com and .org. Unfortunately this domain name violates the fourth item in the namecheap post, “Hard-to-Spell Words”. I wish I could have started with www.harvey.toys, but at least I can tell people to use it now and they will get here.
