Eight dogs and three cats removed in July from a suspected hoarder’s home in northeast Grand Rapids, Michigan are now up for adoption.
The Kent County Health Department on Thursday said the animals are in good health after weeks of rehabilitation, although some still need continued medical care.
Kent County Animal Control found the animals living in their own filth after tips led officers to the home. A chinchilla also was rescued from the home, but department spokeswoman Lisa LaPlante said Thursday it already had been adopted.
The woman who lived at the home has not been identified, but is charged in 61st Circuit Court with misdemeanor animal cruelty and neglect.
The woman recently signed over rights to the animals, freeing them up for adoption.
The animals up for adoption include multiple small dogs and at least one puppy. Ten dogs total were found at the home, but Kent County Animal Shelter Supervisor Carly Luttmann said two “geriatric” dogs need to undergo further evaluation before becoming available.
“We always recommend that adopters take their new pet to the veterinarian within a week or two after adopting,” Luttmann said in a news release.
“People who are interested in these dogs should be aware that many of them will require a little extra patience and care with socialization, training and medical issues, such as complete dental cleaning after adoption,” she added.
Anyone interested in adopting should contact the Kent County Animal Shelter at (616) 632-7300 or online at www.icpawz.com.
The animals are eligible for adoption under a promotion made possible by a grant from the Bissell Pet Foundation.
All dogs may be adopted from the shelter for $50, plus $12 in licensing fees. Cats may be adopted for $5, and the cost includes getting the pets spayed, neutered and up-to-date vaccinations.
