Does Your Business Have Personality?

By Linsibrownson @CleverSpark
Business Personality Zzzzzz. You know it really hit home for me today. Does your business have personality? Like a good one that people might like? Let me go back a little bit so you know where this all started. I was listening to a pretty famous guru. You know one of the ones that have almost 30,000 Facebook fans? Like they have a really solid following and seem pretty legit. Recently they had a free webinar about growing leads on your Facebook page. I signed up for it to see if there was any new info to be learned. I almost fell asleep half way through it. That’s when I decided to close that window on my browser and said, “eff it”. If you are going to bore me to sleep I am not going to hear a word you said. All I am going to think about is how boring your business personality is. And then I am going to hope that isn’t your real life personality, either. Because then I picture your family falling asleep at dinnertime with their heads careening into the mashed potatoes on their plate. I really started to think that this guru was a robot (if not some weird version of a Stepford Wife). You know, a monotone voice with some fake inflection sprinkled in to make us think they’re human. Then I lastly thought to myself that I will never, ever listen to that guru again because of their boring robotic-ness. (On a side note: Linsi made this brilliant post about Gurus and their bitterness about being copied (and I guess they seem to forget that there aren’t any original ideas anymore, really). You should go read it if you haven’t already.) So here way the big epiphany for the day. Here it is. Are you ready? Are ya? You or I could be a guru of epic proportions and if we aren’t someone else’s cup of tea. It is okay. But can we try to not make business so serious? You might like robotic people and I prefer people who drop the occasional F-Bomb. And we don’t have to go to one extreme or the other. We can be normal people. Okay, you can be a normal person with a great personality. I struggle with normal, but that’s is a-ok. Don’t bore your audience, be open, make mistakes, show your human side. Give your business a fun personality.
