Does choosing a certain vice-presidential candidate help or hurt a presidential candidate? Would it make voters more or less likely to vote for either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. The Monmouth University Poll tried to find out by asking voters if any of six possible vice-presidential candidates for both parties would affect their votes. Their poll was done between June 15th and 19th of a random national sample of 803 registered voters, and the poll has a margin of error of 3.5 points.
It turns out that five of the six candidates for both parties would have little or no effect. The "more likely" and "less likely" voters cancelled each other out, and a majority said those candidates would have no effect on how they voted.
But one Republican had a significant effect -- Sarah Palin. About 42% said they would be less likely to vote Republican if she was on the ticket. One Democrat also had a fairly significant effect -- Bernie Sanders. About 39% said they would be more likely to vote Democratic if he was on the ticket.
I seriously doubt either Palin or Sanders will be a vice-presidential candidate this year. That means the real picks are unlikely to significantly affect the election.
