Do you know – Chocolate can kill dogs
Posted by Vikas Acharya on January 23, 2026Why it’s toxic:
Chocolate contains theobromine (and caffeine). Dogs can’t break these down the way humans can, so the toxins build up in their system.
How dangerous it is depends on:
- 🍫 Type of chocolate
- Most dangerous: baking chocolate, dark chocolate, cocoa powder
- Less dangerous (but still risky): milk chocolate
- White chocolate: very little theobromine, but still unhealthy
- 🐕 Dog’s size (small dogs are at much higher risk)
- ⏱️ Amount eaten
Possible symptoms (can start within hours):
- Vomiting, diarrhea
- Restlessness, hyperactivity
- Rapid heart rate
- Tremors or seizures
- In severe cases: heart failure or death
What to do if a dog eats chocolate:
- Don’t wait for symptoms
- Call your vet or an emergency animal clinic immediately
- You can also contact Pet Poison Helpline or ASPCA Animal Poison Control
