Do I Need a Box Spring?

By Goedekershomelife @goedekers

History

The box spring was initially created to raise mattress heights, absorb shock to reduce mattress wear, and establish a flat, firm foundation. But are they relevant now? Well technically, no.

First, lets establish that you do not NEED a box spring to place your mattress on. You only need something that raises the mattress to the desired height and a flat, firm structure for it to be placed upon.

This literally can be anything! From a bed frame to the floor; or for those of you who have a little carpentry experience, something custom made.

It is important to note that some mattress warranties require a box spring as the foundation. With this exception, you are able to utilize the frame and foundation support of your choice.

Box Spring Alternative

Instead of using a box spring, choose a frame that has a built in support, such as a platform bed or an adjustable bed.

Platform Beds are rectangular bed frames that are already elevated and contain wooden slates to support your mattress. The benefits of choosing a platform bed include:

Saving Money - Generally, you will buy a bed frame, the rail system for the floor, mattress and box spring when purchasing a new bed. You can skip all the extra pieces and just place your mattress right on top of the frame with a platform bed.

Extra Storage - Box springs are usually low to the ground. A platform bed is already raised and leveled, creating space underneath for storage. Everyone likes more storage!
Modern/Contemporary Design - 21st Century decor is all about being modern. Effortlessly add this design to your bedroom with a platform bed, as they are constructed with sleek, straight lines.

Adjustable Beds possess a base with a motor that allows you to incline the upper body, or raise the lower body independent of each other. Adjustable beds are modern, like the platform bed. Additional perks include:

Better Health - Adjustable beds have been noted to help alleviate sleep apnea, heartburn, acid reflux, GERD, and even snoring and back pain.
Exceptional Comfort - Due to the varied positions available with the adjustable bed, sleepers are able to obtain optimal comfort. They have the opportunity to adjust the bed to whatever position that is most suitable for their pleasure.

Conclusion

Some of our traditional practices will be abolished, as the furniture industry continues to evolve. While the box spring is still being utilized fairly regularly, I believe that eventually it will become extinct as we move towards a more modern way of living. Box spring alternatives such as the platform and adjustable beds are on the rise; be on the cutting edge and get one now.
