D.I.Y. Homemade Deodorant

By Redneckprincess @RdNeckPrincess

I came across this recipe on blogher on Sew Green’s website…she was a featured blog the same time I was :)

I am the first one to say that I was leery about a homemade deodorant. I have tried everything under the sun that is supposed to work, the crystal thing, deodorant from the health food store etc. and have always gone back to the strongest antiperspirant I can find. I sweat. I own it, and I hate to smell bad, so I won’t chance it.

Today I tried this recipe, and it works!! I don’t know yet how it would hold up in the middle of summer, but it worked for me on a normal day and after a hard walk with the wee dog…so I am going to say that is way more than a step ahead of the other things I have tried.

Now if you have sensitive skin, you might want to cut the ratio of baking soda down. I also never used the arrowroot powder as I didn’t have it on hand, so I upped the cornstarch to 1/4 cup instead.

D.I.Y. Homemade Deodorant

  • 5-6 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1/8 cup arrowroot powder
  • 1/8 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 10-15 drops of essential oil of your choice, I used Lemongrass and Lavender…

Melt the Coconut oil gently in the microwave.

Mix the powders together in a jar and slowly add the coconut oil until you have a “pomade” consistency and powders are mostly dissolved. Add a few drops of oil until it has a lovely hint of scent.

I keep it in a small mason jar on my bathroom shelf, the consistency of the coconut oil will change if it is too hot in your bathroom, it was too hot on my bathroom shelf so I moved it over to the windowsill where it is a little cooler, I like mine the consistency of a soft body butter.

So even if you are a disbeliever, try this, it really works, it’s cheap to make and it is healthy for you to use!!
