DIY Halloween Envelopes

Post image for DIY Halloween Envelopes

Every year I get to create a fun envelope for my clients, Caroline and Ben Peterson,

who throw the most amazing Halloween party.

I never know what the theme will be until they send me a pic of the invite.

(The pic above is a print out of it with a rough sample of my design and suggestion for the stamp design.  The actual invite is 5″ x 7″.)

The grouping of crows reminded me of the movie “The Birds”,

a classic 1963 Hitchcock movie.

I decided a black crow on the orange envelope with white lettering would really pop.

The first thing I did was draw an image  of one of the crows on tracing paper .

This one would give me enough room to put the address inside.

You can easily put the image on the envelope using transfer paper, found at any craft store.

Here’s what it looks like after it’s traced.

Next I painted the crow in, using black acrylic chalkboard paint.

At the bottom of the feet, I painted pieces of sticks to look like part of a crow’s nest.

You can also use non-chalkboard paint.

I wanted a flat image without sheen so I  chose the chalkboard variety.

But plain non glossy acrylic will work as well.

Again, this is purchased at any local craft store.

After painting them all in, I used a fine tip Sharpie water based poster marker

to address the envelopes in a basic block lettering style with a twist.

These can be hard to find so you can also use a white gel pen or any other fine point white marker/pen.

I suggested the client use a skull in the design for the Zazzle custom stamp.

Once the stamp was in place I painted a string from the crow’s beak to the top of the skull.

That one little line created the effect of the crow holding the head in it’s beak.

My favorite part!

You could also use this to make food and party signs!

Here’s some of the hand lettered food signs I created for the party.

The place cards we used came from the Martha Stewart collection at Michael’s.

I loved brainstorming the names with Caroline!

Have a Happy, Haunted, Hallowed Halloween!
