Flawlessly sculptured by time which antedates to about 67,000 years, the massive cave systems were conceived in Peñablanca, Cagayan – that is the Callao Cave. The Callao Cave is one of the largest cave systems in the Philippines. Its gleaming stalactites and stalagmites created by epoch carved seven wonderful chambers and stunning formations, the Column, Chapel, Skeleton, Elephant’s Head, Praying Angel, Rocket, Lion’s Head and Dog’s Head Formations.
The first huge chamber is called the Aviary Room for it serves as the home for several species of birds. The main attraction of the cave is the second chamber called Divine Room. It was transformed into a chapel; the altar of the chapel is perfectly speckled of cave skylight which lights in the dark cave. This natural cathedral has also witnessed numerous of wedding ceremonies.
The next chamber has no opening and is therefore dark; understandably it is called Dark Room. Form here a good torch seems appropriate. A large formation which looks like three scoops of ice-cream will catch your attention in one of the chambers; this one is called the Cream Room. The next trail will bring you to the Jungle Area, named after several animal-shaped rock formations. The sixth room has a channel diverging off intermediate up the ceiling. It is accessible on spelunking tours. The final chamber is called the Sun Room, where a big skylight allows sun rays to pass through the cave and gives natural illumination.
How to get to Callao CaveIt is just 30 minutes ride by tricycle, jeep, and or habal habal from Tuguegarao which is the capital city of Cagayan Valley.
