Garage pop rock quartet Ravi Shavi have wasted no time in releasing some of the catchiest hip-swinging tunes you’re likely to hear. Independent is the band’s latest EP, and this record is the lovechild between post-punk and 60s rock — it’s also very much the continuation of the hyperactive percussion and upbeat melodies the band is best known for. “The Ruins” is the band’s third track off the record, and due to songs like this one, they’ve been attracting a larger audience lately. “The Ruins” has a bit of everything, and its fast, rhythmic percussion and guitar breakdown make the song, in particular, an amazing, archetypal Ravi Shavi tune.
“Device” is the fifth song off the EP, and this slower track offers a nice variation from the rest of the jam-packed, high energy songs. However, it’s still fully charged with a contagious and electric energy, retro guitar licks and cheeky lyrics like, “She’s such a teaser/My baby darlin’ is a keeper.” With this, Ravi Shavi demonstrate their talent for blending genres together and making it all sound fantastic. With feel good music like the kind found on Independent, it’s no wonder this band has been deemed advocates of a good time.
