Based on the Iberian Peninsula, sandwiched between Spain and the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal is a fabulous place to visit at any time of year. Named after its second city, Porto, this captivating country has a fascinating history that has seen numerous conquests, settlements and battles spanning thousands of years. In fact, evidence suggests that Portugal had numerous prehistoric settlements while, in slightly more recent history, it has a heritage that touches on Roman, Visigothic and Moorish civilisations that repeatedly invaded and fought over Portugal’s rule.

So, it’s fair to say that Portugal holidays are rich in culture and history. In particular, a visit to the stunning capital city of Lisbon is a chance to explore its impressive architecture and lovely cobbled streets – particularly whilst sipping on a frothy cappuccino or tucking into authentic Portuguese cuisine in a cosy pavement cafe. But Portugal holidays aren’t all about looking back. Lisbon might be historic but it’s also a contemporary city with modern transport systems, designer boutiques and cutting-edge fashion trends, not to mention the location of some of the world’s leading businesses.

If that’s all a little too hectic for your holiday, why not escape to the sprawling vineyards and craggy mountain ranges of central Portugal for a week or two of hiking, biking, and a big lungful of fresh air. Or, head to the coast and soak up its dramatic Atlantic swells and soaring honey-coloured cliffs. The Algarve is the most popular coastal location for sun-seekers, and it’s full to the brim with bustling beach resorts and modern hotels. Here you can entertain the whole family, laze on golden sands or dance the night away to the latest hits.
