A lone stand of 93 runs by Diniru Abeywickremasinghe went abegging as St Thomas defended 184 runs to clinch the 23rd limited over encounter from big match rivals St Servatius at the Uyanwatta Stadium on Saturday. With this win the Thomians increase their lead in the limited over series by 12 games to 8.

Diniru’s 93 came off 113 balls and included three boundaries and three sixes. The only other batsman to reach double figures was skipper Hasitha Amarasinghe who scored 12. Pesandu Sanjan captured four wickets while Harindu took two to help St Thomas to win by 47 runs.

Overnight rain delayed the start and the Thomians won the toss and elected to bat first.

Their hopes of posting a big score were dashed when their star batsman and centurion from last weeks big match Harindu Jayasekara failed to continue his heroics by falling victim to Kushan Wijerama for 20 in the sixth over.

Wijerama and Wiran Chamuditha kept chipping at the wickets but the Thomian batsmen except for three posted double digit scores to see them reach 184.

Brief scores

St Thomas’: 184 all out in 50 overs (Harindu Jayasekara 20, Pesandu Sanjan 22, Nipun Samarasinghe 23, Sachira Rashmika 30 ; Wiran Chamuditha 3-34, Kushan Wijerama 3-40)

St Servatius’: 137 in 39.2 overs (Diniru Abeyeickremasinghe 93, Hasitha Amarasinghe 12; Harindu Jayasekara 2-10, Pasandu Sanjan 4-36)
